WHY  A  REPUBLIC?

The Dictatorship - Canada’s Dysfunctional Governing System

All Prime Ministers and Premiers are dictators in their own right. The people never elected them to office directly. Their names have never appeared on any ballot! The Crown of England to whom they swear their allegiance vests enormous powers in them. They were granted the authority to appoint their own senators. A bicameral legislative body is a governing body that has two chambers, a lower chamber, the "Congress" or "House of Commons" as it is called in Canada and an upper chamber, "the Senate". The upper or senior chambers in both Canada and America have the authority to overrule the lower chambers. The great difference between the countries is that in America, BOTH the "Congress" and the "Senate" are elected to office. This therefore becomes a balanced bicameral legislative assembly. In Canada however, the people elect the "House of Commons", but the SENATE IS APPOINTED! Historically they have overruled the people's elected representatives at the behest of the Prime Ministers. Hence our elected "Members of Parliament" commonly use the term "dictatorship" in their speeches.

Canada's Senators are essentially civil servants because they were never elected to office! They are appointed to office by the PM in much the same way that the CEO of a Crown Corporation is appointed. Many Canadians regard them as a disgrace and a laughing stock.

Further to this, the PM's appoint the Supreme Court Judges. This effectively removes them from any discipline, prosecution or removal from office for wrongdoing through the courts. Canadians remain helpless in this form of autocracy.

Whenever a country deteriorates into an autocracy of this nature the people are at the mercy of the whims of their leaders. In this case we can inherit a benevolent autocrat or a tyrant. The province of British Columbia is a classic example. Premier WAC Bennett was considered a benevolent autocrat because of a booming economy under his leadership, but he was an autocrat nevertheless. Premier Dave Barrett, the next Premier, was a tyrant because of the destruction of that booming economy and the loss of many freedoms. In any autocracy, even a benevolent autocrat can be easily corrupted without checks and balances in place.

Pierre Trudeau was the most powerful and important autocrat in Canadian history. Many Canadians consider him to have been a "tyrant leader" because under his rule more permanent damage was done to the Canadian economy, combined with the loss of many freedoms, than any other leader. His domineering influence and ruinous legacy remains unmatched by any other Prime Minister in the history of the Nation.

Election dates are chosen by these leaders to suit their own political purposes. As a result, they can remain in control longer than the prescribed election term. The Parliamentary system can be unstable in that a Prime Minister or Premier can be removed from office by a simple vote of "Non Confidence". Both of these leaders can be changed in mid-term by the ruling political party that they belong to and lead; they don't even need a vote of "non-confidence" in the legislative assembly to change the leader. In this case, the people have absolutely no say! This cannot happen in America. Their elected leader remains in office for a fixed term that cannot be changed. The only way of removal is by impeachment for wrongdoing by "The People" through their Senate! In America, the supreme power is always in the hands of the People.

Ludwig Von Mises. . "Everything brought forward in favor of socialism during the last hundred years, in thousands of writings and speeches, all the blood which has been spilt by the supporters of socialism, cannot make socialism workable.  Nothing has shaken the proof that under socialism economic calculation is impossible."
